Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a scholarly organization of national significance as perceived by a 1959 demonstration of the Indian parliament. It became out of the Statistical Laboratory set up by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in Presidency College, Kolkata. Built up in 1931, this state funded college of India is one of the most established and most prestigious organizations concentrated on measurements, and its initial notoriety drove it to being embraced as a model for the main US foundation of Statistics set up at the Research Triangle, North Carolina by Gertrude Mary Cox.

Mahalanobis, the author of ISI, was profoundly affected by insight and direction of Rabindranath Tagore and Brajendranath Seal. Under his authority, the foundation started and advanced the collaboration of Statistics with common and sociologies to propel the part of Statistics as a key innovation by elucidating the twin aspects – its general relevance and its reliance on different orders for its own improvement. The establishment is currently considered as one of the chief focuses on the planet for preparing and research in Computer science, Statistics and related sciences.

ISI has its home office in Baranagar, a suburb of Kolkata, West Bengal. It has four auxiliary focuses centered in scholastics at Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Tezpur, and a branch at Giridih. Moreover, the Institute has a system of units of Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research at Vadodara, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune occupied with controlling the ventures, inside and outside India, in building up the most up–to–date quality administration frameworks and tackling basic issues of value, dependability and profitability.

Essential exercises of ISI are research and preparing of Statistics, advancement of hypothetical Statistics and its applications in different regular and sociologies. Initially subsidiary with the University of Calcutta, the organization was pronounced a foundation of national significance in 1959, through a demonstration of Indian parliament, Indian Statistical Institute act, 1959. ISI works under the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation(MOSPI) of the Government of India.
