DRDO Head Quarter - Delhi

Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) was inaugurated in the year 1958 by merging Defense Science Organization and numerous technical development foundations. A diverse Department of Defense Research and Development was developed in the year 1980 which at presents manages DRDO and its 50 laboratories/foundations. DDRO is presently managed by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who was formerly director of the Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) accountable for country’s missile development program. One motive for the hindrance in DRDO-led projects is the DRDO's institutional emphasis on R&D, instead of simply sending a project.  

Moreover DRDO is a non-commercial government sector, restricted by procurement regulations and practices. By tradition and practice, R&D labs are little emphasis on deliverables and project handling. The DRDO is like an educational institute; it is in the trade of educating and learning. If they are asked to develop a project which has high standard for certification and fulfill deliverable and marketable standards, they don’t know what to do and how to do.

Most of the time the DRDO was considered as if it was a merchant and the Army/Air Headquarters was the customers. Since the Army and the Air Force themselves didn’t have any accountability regarding design or construction, they have a tendency to treat the designer of the Indian industry at par with their analogous designer in the world market. If they received about MiG 21 from the international market, they desired a MiG 21 from Defense Research and Development Organization. This was impossible and non-feasible too.

The Department of DRD makes and run professionals of scientific research, design and development in the sector of significance to nationwide safety leading to the introduction of novel weapons, platforms and other tools needed by the Indian Armed Forces. It also work as the nodal firm for the implementation of key development programs of importance to Defense through incorporation of research, development, testing and production services with the countrywide scientific institutes, public sector undertakings and other firms. It operates under the control of scientific mentor to Raksha Mantri who is also desk person, Defense Research and Development.

Defense Research and Development Organization has made notable success in its efforts to meet the necessities of the three Services. These impressive successes covers flight simulators for aircrafts, small sized remote based piloted vehicle, light field gun, charge line mine clearing vehicle for safe passage of vehicles in battlefield, ammunitions for enhancing night flight potentials and much more.
