LED Expo: Highlighting environmental benefits, human-centric lighting and more

“Lighting of the future will control our well-being” remarked Ms. Sudeshna Mukhopadhyay, Head, Centre of Competence - Lighting Specialist & Lighting Academy, Philips Lighting India at the LED Summit that took place during LED Expo in Mumbai last year. Elaborating further on this, LED Summit is set to return with thought leaders discoursing the concepts of intelligent LED lighting systems and the sustainable way of lighting this May. To be held concurrently with LED Expo – India’s premier exhibition on LED lighting products and technologies, the summit will take place on 13 May at the Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Arguments in favour of energy-efficient buildings have always been primarily focus on the environmental sustainability of LEDs. As a result, the main advantage of internal lighting systems that is usually stressed is reduced carbon footprint. What is often overlooked is the effect of lighting design in human well-being. For starters, LED light bulbs do not contain toxic materials like traditional and fluorescent light bulbs which contain mercury, exposure to which can be linked to health issues. LED bulbs also do not pose the risk of UV overexposure.

With human eye and the human brain known to be sensitive to light, right lighting conditions through LEDs can make a big difference to health, well-being and work performance. The absence of flicker, glare and hum, as well as correct colour rendering can minimize headaches, eye strain and discomfort while enhancing attention and productivity levels at work places. The use of daylight-frequencies in lighting, is also known to improve melatonin levels that are related to mood. This concept called Human Centric Lighting has the power to help people suffering from mental health diseases such as anxiety and depression. By combining the right spectrum, lighting of the future is said to control our well-being and LEDs have a major role to play in it. The switch to LED lighting is happening fast not only because of the savings that can be made and the environmental benefits but because of its importance in creating an overall healthy environment.

Many such LED innovations can once again be seen and experienced at the upcoming edition of the LED Expo that is set to take place from 12 – 14 May 2016 in Mumbai. Over 150 companies from Indian and abroad will come together with cost-effective and competitive LED solutions for the Indian market. Alongside the show, the LED Summit, will cover three mega trends affecting the industry under the themes of ‘Make-in-India’ products promoting domestic manufacturing, implementing LED lighting standards and emerging use of Organic LED lighting (OLEDs).
